Academic Brief Implementation in Universities in Nigeria: Importance, Challenges, and Prospects

Abstract

This paper examines the academic brief implementation in universities in Nigeria with focus on importance, challenges and prospects. Secondary data were used in the paper. The secondary data were sorted from print publication and online resources. The paper concluded that academic brief provides strategic direction for institutional development, guides academic planning and programme development, facilitates programme accreditation and regulatory compliance, supports effective resource allocation, enhances infrastructure development and physical planning, assists human resource planning, promotes quality assurance and academic excellence, improves financial planning and budget preparation, supports institutional expansion and sustainable growth, strengthens evidence-based decision-making, promotes regulatory compliance, facilitates monitoring and evaluation, encourages institutional stability and continuity, promotes accountability and transparency and enhances institutional competitiveness and reputation. Also, inadequate funding, weak institutional planning culture, shortage of qualified academic planning personnel, poor data management systems, frequent changes in university leadership, political and external interference, inadequate monitoring and evaluation and rapid expansion of universities without corresponding resources were identified as challenges militating against effective implementation of academic brief in the universities in Nigeria. The paper identified; strong government commitment, increased stakeholder involvement, support from international development organisations, digitalisation of academic planning, capacity building for academic planning personnel, institutionalisation of academic brief preparation, increased funding for higher education, strengthening quality assurance mechanisms, collaboration among universities, emergence of professional associations, growing demand for evidence-based decision-making and integration with strategic planning and accreditation as the prospects of academic brief implementation in the universities in Nigeria.
